When they say the CELTA is tough they are not kidding! Sharon Balani and Julie Bray were exceptional instructors and stringent reviewers… you will not leave this course without a thorough analysis of your teaching, valid hours under your belt and a sense of what it really takes to be the best out there. If you want to be above standard, you really need to be above standard: this to me merely validates the certificate you receive. If they gave it away easily it would be meaningless. I am still amazed that within one month I went from a complete newbie to someone can easily prepare a comprehensive lesson plan tailored to both learning aims and learner level; this would not be possible without this class and these instructors!

I finished CELTA course on August 16th and it was one of the most intense things that I had to deal with. The course overall was full of new information and the hardest thing to do was to internalize the knowledge and use it the very next day during the teaching practice. Our trainers, Sharon Balani and Julie Bray were very competent and professional and they knew how to help the trainees when they were stressed out. They were also very successful keeping the energy up with fun activities and different types of giving essential information during the input sessions. I’m really glad that I travelled all the way to the US and took the course in NYC. It was one of the best decisions I have made so far.

I recently took and passed my CELTA course. The course content was very new to me. My tutors, Sharon Balani and Sharon Buddemeier worked with me in my areas of weakness. I can move forward confidently because my tutors were able to help me. The course is worth the investment. I recommend to anyone serious about ESL teaching. Cheers!

Already an experienced ESL teacher I knew I needed a teaching certificate to start my teaching career in a new country but wasn’t too sure that the course would have much to offer me– I was totally mistaken!

(I was also mistaken about what an ‘intensive’ course actually meant: I’d make sure I spend less time commuting if I were to take the course again so that I have more time for lesson planning/preparation!)

After a 5-year gap in my ESL teaching career, the course reinforced all I already knew and helped me overcome deep-rooted problems in my teaching and make my teaching as student-centered as possible.

The teaching practice was invaluable: We taught real students from all over the world! (I had had some training years ago where teachers and teachers-to-be pretended to be teachers for the few hours of teaching practice that we had!)

At the heart of all I learned about improving my teaching during the DC CELTA course were our two tutors: Sharon Buddemeir and Sharon Balani– both dedicated, competent and highly-experienced!

They taught us how to teach/improve our teaching both in their lessons and by example of how they were teaching us to teach.

Now that I have taken the course I feel confident to enter the classroom again and am hopeful of landing a job as an ESL teacher– although my name isn’t Sharon!

The training and class structure was great but the intensity level was higher than I anticipated. I will take a lot away from my experience at Teaching House and most of it will be positive. I have definitely learned a lot about myself in the last month. I know that this training will help my teaching career. The resources and classrooms were fine and after a couple of days I felt right at home. I appreciated the feedback from my peers after teaching the lessons. I enjoyed the input sessions. They were very instructive and gave me a chance to be a student. In the afternoons I was a teacher but in the mornings I learned from the best!

The class is finished and I terribly miss it! I miss the trainers and my classmates.

Good luck to everybody!

I graduated from the Teaching House Intensive CELTA in NYC,NY one month ago. I found the course really interesting and I feel that I gained a lot through this experience. This CELTA course was great, enjoyable and “stressful”. I really loved it a lot. I’m really glad I took the decision to follow this course. The facilities were great although I believe we could have had a bigger space to work on our lesson plans and make our copies. The teaching practice and the feedback that we took from our tutors and peers was helpful and gave us some hints on where we should focus more and where we need improvement. Observing our fellow participants was like observing experienced teachers from whom we could “steal” the parts we liked and avoid the “errors” they made. IN input seasons we have learnt plenty of things which were quite useful for our teaching practice. I definitely recommend this program!

I got recommended to take the CELTA in New York and I am very happy I have taken it. I have learnt a lot and I believe it is very beneficial if you want to carry on in the field of teaching or even if you want to get the feel of it as you get to teach real students. The course was really useful. I learnt a lot of new information and skills. It ws very intensive but worth it if you have 4 weeks to spare out of your life 🙂 It really made me feel like I want to explore new areas of the field of teaching and it has encouraged me to take more course. Another printer would be good. Teaching Practice and feedback were extremely useful as you get the feel of the real thing. Feedback was always nice to hear as you got to see what you’re doing well in and what you need to work on. Learning new ideas, techniques, etc. was very useful in the input sessions and I learnt a lot from each session. The trainers always kept them interesting, interactive and as useful as possible.

I completed the CELTA course at Teaching House Chicago and loved it. The instructors are very well qualified, and they teach you not only how to teach ESL, but also why these methods are so effective, which I found extremely helpful. Additionally, after seeing these methods modeled in your own input sessions by the trainers, you practice and perfect the methods you learn in the classroom and get in-depth, immediate feedback from your instructors and peers. The trainers passion for this course really shows, and you can tell they really want you to become a great teacher. I learned a lot doing this course, and you become very close with all of your classmates struggling through the same challenges! I would definitely recommend it to anyone serious bout teaching ESL. No matter how much experience you have, you will learn a lot and it will be well worth your time and money!

This was an excellent investment. As a teacher I have gained additional valuable experience. The course material crosses over into so many things and I think is beneficial in general for your development as a professional. If I never teach another ESL class in my life, this course was well worth it as this knowledge can be applied anywhere in your professional life. The instructors were extremely competent, great with feedback and ready to help. Abbi, Natasha and Nia were also very helpful in providing us administrative support and with using the facilities. It was definitely a lot of work but well worth it in the end.

I completed my CELTA certification at Teaching House Chicago. I was very happy with the content of the course as it attacked all possible angles of the teaching process. I was thoroughly impressed at all the layers that were covered in my assessment, down to my board work. As a teacher whose professional middle name has been “throw her in there and she’ll figure it out,” I gratefully appreciated the constructive knowledge and instruction I received during my training. Beyond the theoretical aspect of the knowledge, I was blown away when I realized that my instructors were literally day in and day out modeling what they were teaching us. This really solidified my reference for how I was supposed to function within the classroom. Having found the right perspective to go into feedback with, my two instructors really grounded my faith in my capacity to teach and trust in myself as an educator. As the course progressed and the level went up, so did the detail given in their critique. I am completely confident in my instructors’ capabilities to direct each trainee with aims of achieving their full potential. The only area for improvement I would suggest would be in the job placement assistance. I wish I could have had earlier assistance in the job search, and more time to be individually directed. TH Chicago – thanks for all the direction and support given in my personal creation process as a teacher. I am excited to be reaping the benefits of my training for years to come!
