Getting TEFL certification through The Language House was, without a doubt, one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences of my life. What sets it apart from many other certificate programs is the valuable 14 hours of teaching practice that you get. The course pushes you in a way that takes you out of your comfort zone and puts you into a real-life teaching setting right from the beginning. And Chris Westergaard is an amazing director- even before I arrived to Prague, he answered all of my questions and addressed all of my concerns about the program without hesitation. He really knows his stuff when it comes to teaching and he makes the course really fun and engaging.

The other great thing about this program is that there is a relatively smooth transition from life during the course to finding an actual job and living in Prague. There are many past graduates from the course still living in Prague and because there’s such a strong community of them here, it was really easy to meet people and make friends. Moreover, they’ve all been through the same experience so they can completely relate to any stresses or concerns that you might have regarding the course and life after the course. There was a period right after the course, before finding a job, where I felt like, “What now?” but as long as you apply yourself in terms of finding a job and getting settled in the city, everything works out great.

Overall, I HIGHLY recommend this course. If you are looking for an opportunity to live and work abroad, The Language House is absolutely the way to do it!

I researched a lot of different TEFL courses before deciding on TLH (The Language House) and I am so pleased with my choice. Having read reviews about how ‘tough’ the course was, I felt quietly confident that it would all be fine and that probably people who had said this were just expecting a month’s holiday. I was wrong! The four week course is very intense – heed warnings from Chris, Skip and any other teachers who tell you to keep on top of the homework and all other aspects. However, if you are like me then you will surely feel that the intensity is demonstrative of getting your money’s worth. Throughout the course you have the clear sense that the instructors really care about the TEFL students not just passing, but becoming good teachers. The staff are all supportive and helpful. Chris (or ‘King TEFL’ as he is also known), is somehow constantly available to provide support on all aspects of the course and life in Prague which is very reassuring to know. The course involves a lot of real teaching practice, which is extremely helpful and the observers provide helpful feedback and advice. My experience generally was excellent with TLH. Yes, it was hard, but I have learnt so much and met some wonderful people that will be life long friends. I would highly recommend that people choose The Language House TEFL course.

Choosing to take my TEFL certification at The Language House in Prague was a great decision. The course was thorough and challenging, but also amazingly fun. I made wonderful friends and had a great experience. More importantly, the course truly prepared me for a career in teaching English abroad. As someone with little to no experience teaching prior to coming to Prague, The Language House equipped me with all of the necessary skills and techniques needed to be a successful teacher. I can say with confidence that I am prepared to instruct students of all ages and teach a variety of topics. I highly recommend this course to anyone interested in teaching English abroad or looking for a unique and rewarding experience!

I have to start off by saying that choosing to take the TEFL course through The Language House was one of the best decisions I have ever made. The best part of The Language House is the attention to detail that the faculty gives their students, not only in the classroom, but also outside the classroom in order to prepare us to be successful in all aspects of our lives here in Prague. The Language House makes sure to adapt to each students needs. For example the owner, Chris Westergard, knew I was nervous about flying to Prague and taking on the challenge of The Language House, so he found time to personally call me in the states to make sure all of my questions were fully answered. In addition TLH took extra steps to help their students with accommodations such as airport pick-up, phones, public transportation, money exchange, tours, interview/job prep, and living arrangements, which people who don’t go through TLH generally do not receive.

I won’t lie, with 12-hour days, the course itself is very demanding and challenging. I was exhausted during the entire month and at times I was nervous that I wasn’t performing to the best of my abilities, but never once did TLH team give up on their students. They always found a way to make sure you understood the material even if that meant finding a different way to explain to you. On top of being very efficient in teaching the material, the faculty always presented the materials in a fun and creative way. Let’s just say that there was never a dull moment in The Language House. Even though at first I was skeptical of my personal success in the TEFL course, by the time the course ended I felt confident that I would be capable of teaching English as a foreign language and that is all thanks to my teachers at TLH.

Past the TEFL course itself one of my favorite perks about TLH is our strong alum network. There is always someone there to answer a question, help you move into your apartment, and of course grab a beer, or two, with. I love the energy of the community I’m now apart of, so much so that I have already extended my stay in Prague. All I have left to say is, come to Prague and join The Language House community; I promise you won’t regret it!

I arrived in Prague this last October and have been living and teaching here since. The Language House has been extremely helpful throughout the entire process. They provide not only an excellent TEFL course, but also access to an amazing community of ex-patriots already living here who tend to help each other through the inevitable daily confusion that accompanies living in a foreign country. The experience is fun, educational, and fascinating, and the Language House does a wonderful job keeping it that way by running a business that’s approachable, keeps its integrity, and actively works to keep a maintain a helpful community of alumni.

I think The Language House offers a really good course. It’s fairly intensive but not overly so (I found that people overhyped that aspect of the course–it’s completely manageable). I really did feel like a competent teacher upon finishing the course. The staff is knowledgable and provides consistent, good feedback. You practice teaching real students throughout the course, which is great training–you recognize your weaknesses and have constant opportunities to improve. It’s also worth mentioning the alumni network, which is super helpful once the course is over.

The only thing I really marked down was the facilities/resources category, because our printers ran out of ink one-by-one throughout the course, which made things difficult for 20 people trying to prepare lessons at the same time. Also, if you’re thinking of coming to Prague to teach, be aware that there can be a lot of unanticipated expenditures (especially with Visa stuff), so think twice before coming over with only a couple thousand dollars. I’ve found that it’s not hard to find work here, but it can be a struggle to get your monthly income up to where you’d like it to be. (This isn’t really about TLH, but it’s still important.)

On that note, I really recommend TLH to anyone who’s wants to teach English in Prague. It met or exceeded all of my expectations, and if I was sent back in time I would do it again.

The Language House is uniquely exceptional because it provides an amazing opportunity for TEFL students. Not only will students be immersed in a rich environment of studying TEFL methodologies; students will get hands-on experience teaching to a variety of levels (beginner to intermediate) challenging any fear of public speaking.

The best part about this training is the cohort mentality and the friendships birthed from living, studying, teaching, and enjoying life together. I didn’t just make teaching partners from the February 2014 class, I made great friends from many walks of life– and this alone was worth the value of moving to Prague. Additionally, The Language House community as a whole maintains great communications, for both students in and out of Czech Republic; making any transition easier.

The only downside was unexpected visa charges and processes. However, with research and help from TLH alumni, I was able to work through the process and get the answers I needed to make it affordable as well.

Overall, the essence and beauty of Prague, as amazing as it is, wasn’t what kept me in Czech Republic. No, it was The Language House — the community, the leadership, the life-long friends made through it, and that feeling I now get after teaching English to my students. There is nothing like it. So, come to Prague, and experience it for yourself!

I had my doubts, I reviewed all the information online for months before I finally decided to give it a go. See the thing is there are so many TEFL programs available it was very difficult to decide. Then something happened, well two things happen. I took a final look at TLH website and found it to be the most comprehensive programs in Prague, (being as it included shenanigans lol) so I proceeded to apply and the second occurrence was I received a call from a rather odd fast talking man that was blunt, honest and a bit charming, and I was sold. I can say with all honesty that TLH has lived up to it’s claims.

I was met and welcomed at the airport, I had wonderful accommodation with a working and educated past TLH student who was instrumental in helping me get settled into Prague and the course. I learned quickly that the course is a learning process and it is not just what you do in between beers, I had to study and work pretty hard to complete the course and for that it gained my respect and gratitude because once completed I was prepare and fully equip to walk out into Prague as a teacher with confidence in my new abilities. The school is located in a convenient centralized area of town and there was always someone around when I started to feel lost or confused, which does happen but gratefully I was not alone TLH, it‘s staff, past and present students were always near to offer a hand.

I learned things that I didn’t even know I didn’t know like Grammar for instance. I was given sound advice on finding my own flat and a job that I would enjoy, both of which were achieved within a matter of a week or two after graduation. I was given harsh reality of the fact that central Europe is not an extension of America and I should not treat as if it is. In the course I was joined and befriended by an amazing group of people that has made my stay here in Prague a joy and an unforgettable experience. Within all I was offered by TLH I feel as though I received more than I paid for cause I also received a body of people that have become a home away from home and at the age of 38.…The experience of my life.

I took the course in September 2013 and I’m currently living and teaching in Prague. These past 8 months have been one of the best and most rewarding times of my life and I definitely attribute some of that to TLH. The course itself does a good job of preparing you for teaching– you get a lot of teaching practice at a variety of levels throughout the program, as well as instruction on methodology and grammar. I took the Young Learners track as well and I was very pleased with the instruction there too, but I would have appreciated some teaching practice with children, as they do with adults. Nevertheless, I would recommend the YLT to anyone interested in working with children after the course.

What really sets TLH apart from other programs though is the support they provide you outside of the classroom. There is a huge TLH network of graduates still living in Prague and they are very welcoming. This really helps with the transition of moving abroad, particularly if you don’t yet know anyone else in the city. TLH also does a great job with helping you find a job during and after the course. The contacts you make at TLH do t end when the course is over– for example, Chris recently helped my roommates and I negotiate the commission fee for our new flat.

The only thing other thing I can think to add is that the costs associated with getting your visa are higher than TLH estimates (for me they were higher by ~$200), but as long as you budget in a little flex money, you should be fine!

I took the course in September 2013 and now have been teaching successfully in Czech Republic. The course was extremely intensive, but well worth all the time and effort. I did feel some of the topics or methodology was a bit narrow, but the course did an excellent job laying down the groundwork. One can’t cover everything in four weeks. I did enjoy the heavy emphasis on grammar. One of my students in a conversation class later asked me to explain direct vs reported speech without preparation and could remember everything clearly.

Some of the mentors observing the classes weren’t as useful in terms of feedback, and one quickly learned standards differed across the board as to what was expected. Despite this, I felt the large amount of time dedicated to teaching was very useful for applying to classes thereafter. I definitely felt like I wasn’t going to sink in my own classes!

I can’t say it wasn’t tough and it does consume your time (like being back at college), but I loved the learning environment and appreciated the wealth of knowledge the teachers had to share. TLH also seemed to provide much help with jobs and visa issues (both things I didn’t need to take advantage of). I’m looking forward to using the graduate network when I move on to teaching elsewhere!
