Completed the CELTA April 4, 2014 class at Teaching House-Chicago.

Strict adherence to the rigorous CELTA standards is evident and thorough. Portfolios were carefully monitored and reviewed independently by outside staff which instilled much confidence.

The linchpin to maximizing success when taking the CELTA program has an external and internal component… Externally, the value of the depth and breath of experience of the tutors (instructors) cannot be overestimated. I had two tutors and both had decades of experience. They were different from each other (that is a good thing) and they both clearly retained a passion for the work.

The internal component is the focus, intelligence, and passion for teaching ESL that the candidate brings to the effort. I am an older student than most of my peers and can factually say that this was the most intellectually demanding four weeks of my academic life. Be forewarned there is also a heavy physical demand as well…sleep deprivation does take its toll over the course of the four weeks.

During the pre-interview process I suggest you learn in depth, the professional experience level of the specific tutors that will be teaching you. One of my instructors, in addition to teaching experience, had administrative experience with ESL and I found those insights particularly helpful during the job search discussions.

One critique I will offer for consideration is to challenge Teaching House to continue to review the professional topics scheduled to be taught. For example, I would challenge them to identify any objective measure to support the section on teaching different learning styles. It simply was too superficially covered to be worth the time spent reviewing it….and time is everything for the four weeks you are in the class. I’m not sure if the tutor staff had any choice in this matter but I would have benefited so much more by seeing them teach more than once (only on the first day) ESL students. I am convinced they are master teachers and observing them would be most beneficial.

The support staff (one) in Chicago was exceptionally professional and helpful. This is a person that can save you (Wi-Fi goes done at the worst possible moment) when you require help the most. Chicago has an excellent person in place.

Everything I learned was based on the foundation of being student-centered. The students I practiced my newly developing skills were patient, motivated, and only encouraging…

The Teaching House-Chicago CELTA program is excellent and I highly recommend it; the tutors are immensely professional, demanding, and supportive, but it was working with the ESL students that solidified my belief that this was the right career for me. I wish you luck, Richard

I just finished this course a week ago, the 4-week session. It honestly was very helpful and insightful! I had no prior experience before this course and I can honestly say I feel a lot more comfortable and confident in front of a classroom now. It’s a bit overwhelming at first, but the trainers I had, Heather (site manager) and Ngaire (freelance) made it a smooth transition for us. It’s not easy, but it’s worth it. The trainers want to see you pass, and they do whatever they can to make that happen for you. I believe that have a permanent trainer now instead of a freelance.

The building is conveniently located downtown and its a close walk from Union station, Michigan ave and State street, with plenty of restaurants. Fellow trainees came from all over the country, such as Florida, Tennessee, Wisconsin, Indianna, etc. I myself am from the Chicago area.

The program is expensive, but the certificate you receive comes with so many benefits. Look at any English teaching online and almost all of them require a CELTA certificate. If teaching abroad is want you want to do, I highly recommend Teaching House Chicago!

Teaching House New York

I write this review about four months after completing my CELTA course at Teaching House New York. Right now, I am in China, teaching for a wonderful school in a fantastic city! I teach adult professionals most evenings, and sometimes I teach Kindergarten during the day! I love every minute of it, even the hard parts. None of this would have been possible without the excellent training and guidance I received from the teacher trainers at Teaching House.

I took the four-week intensive course, and it was pretty much as described – intense. The admission staff was realistic with their promises – it would be difficult, and a bit expensive, and I would not have any free time — not even on the weekends, thanks to the rigorous written assignments that supplement the program. But if I got through it, I would have the gold standard of entry-level ESL certifications. Combine that with my work experience and my graduate degree, and I would have prospects to work almost anywhere in the world. All of this turned out to be completely accurate.

The program itself has a strong focus on teaching practice and methodology. In the mornings, you are occupied with two “input sessions”. These are classes where you are introduced to a single aspect or topic relating to Teaching English as a second language. The curriculum is elegantly constructed in such a way that you get to witness your teacher trainer *actually using* many of the methods they are instructing you in. Instead of simply presenting the material in a typical dry lecture format, the CELTA program at Teaching House introduces you to ideas like “Eliciting Meaning” by having to elicit meanings of various ESL terminologies – through classroom games, puzzles, exercises, partner work, and simple role-play. It’s all very “meta”! It’s also pretty damn brilliant and innovative. The topics start with basic concepts, and then seem to move at a breakneck speed into far more advanced topics, until the final week when you start exploring some advanced territory like deep cultural mores to be avoided, the unique challenges of teaching young learners, and the ins and outs of finding a job abroad.

The trainers are experienced teaching professionals. They are very good at what they do, and it shows. The trainers – and the students – come from different places all over the globe. The principal is from the UK, and my trainers were from Ireland and Singapore. They are passionate, hard working, and they will tell you honestly what you can expect once you start your new life abroad. The trainers also guide you in reaching your personal goals – pointing you in the right direction so you can do your own research on which countries, jobs, and schools you really want to get in contact with. A simple book recommendation from one of my trainers changed my life for the better.

Teaching house gave me the privilege of teaching English to 20 students from 12 different countries, including China, Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Russia, Spain, Ukraine, Argentina, Turkey, Germany, France and Italy. Wherever you decide to take your career, you are almost guaranteed some exposure to the type of student you will be teaching, and you get a feel for how a school is supposed to operate.

You teach on your second day, and every alternate day thereafter. This is the real benefit of the program – you get Teaching Experience. Even if it is only 6 hours spanning 10 sessions, it’s an invaluable requirement that sets you apart from all the others who took a weekend course and barely brushed up against the problems that you faced head on, standing in front of a room full of adult students who are eager to something from you. You also get the benefit of watching your peers and trainers teach as well – you will find opportunities to learn from everyone around you.

The school is itself is situated in Chelsea, a cosmopolitan district in Manhattan, just blocks away from FIT. It’s an easy hike from Penn Station, and you can walk in any direction and find the best pizza in the world. It’s a great place, and a great program. I really have no complaints. I’d love to go back and work there some day, when I’m ready to come home

I took the CELTA through Teaching House, in Los Angeles, in January, 2014. In spite of the fact that I’m a former public school elementary teacher and knew going in that it would be intense, I wasn’t prepared to actually experience the intensity as quickly as I did, during the first week. On day-2, we were expected to teach our first 20-minute lesson, which required preparing a very detailed and in-depth lesson plan. From then on, the work load and intensity increased to longer lessons (40-min, then 60 min) and four papers to write. The instructors, Lizzy and Brian, were wonderful and I don’t know who worked harder, the instructors or the trainees!

As I pushed myself to complete all the lessons and papers, I quickly recognized the incredible value of the course. The CELTA is monitored and standardized by Cambridge University in England, which means that each course teaches a specific set of criteria, which is not the case with vast variety of TEFL courses that exist. The course is worth every penny of the price. An incredible abundance of information is covered. Every lesson is observed by peer tutors, then evaluated and graded by the trainers. The course, was, in effect, a 26-day mental marathon, since I spent my weekends either preparing for a lesson, or writing a paper, or both.

I had also taken an online TEFL course to see what it taught and at the end, on the final “exam”, one of the questions asked if I felt ready to teach a class. The question made me see how critical the practice teaching component of the CELTA is. I enjoyed learning from and observing the growth of my peer students, most of whom knew nothing about teaching. I also loved my growth in transitioning from teaching children, to adults, and learned how much I enjoy teaching adults to speak English (plus – no behavioral issues, as with kids!)

I strongly recommend Teaching House for the CELTA and having graduated, even though I can put my B.S. in Education and TEFL online on my resume, being able to put the CELTA on gives my resume, gives it credibility over the online course that excluded the teaching component. In my eyes, anyone can pass an online TEFL course, since they’re taken at the student’s pace and tests can be retaken at the student’s leisure. To the contrary, intelligence and having the aptitude to actively learn how to teach are required to pass the CELTA. I’m thrilled that I took the course through Teaching House, proud to have it on my resume, and looking forward to using all that I learned in my first teaching job!

I completed the CELTA course November, 2013. I was fortunate to get a job the week I returned home. I now teach Chinese exchange students at a local private school.

There is really no way I can express the gratitude I have towards the staff at Teaching House. They made the CELTA experience something that will not soon be forgotten. They were knowledgable, kind, compassionate and empathic throughout the flurry of assignments, teaching exercises and emotions. The facilities were fine. They could do with another printer – but that was the only complaint I can come up with.

Now that I have been teaching for a few months, I have decided to go back and get my YL extension as well as the Cert IBET. How pleasing to get the follow-up support. David not only was prompt in his response, but able to point me in the right direction to achieve my goals.

I highly recommend Teaching House, NYC. They know what they are doing.

A very well structured and well executed course given by caring professionals. Everything we did was relevant to practical teaching and the instructors gave challenging but also fair recommendations in an encouraging way.

The classes were well organized and instructors helped candidates to both manage the classroom and keep students effectively involved. The criteria set by Cambridge was understandable and helpful. Lesson planning was emphasized and I learned a lot about how helpful planning can be.

Even though I was given a lot of helpful websites, I thought that Job Placement could have been better, although my desired location was pretty specific (Hiroshima). I think that if CELTA partnered with more organizations (and maybe it does somewhat, I don’t know all the facts) it would be easier for people like me who have a specific place in mind to get jobs where we want.

I just finished the 4 week CELTA course in Chicago. I went in with no formal teaching training. The course was definitely intensive as they tell you beforehand, but well worth it.

I’m not from Chicago but am glad I chose to do the course there. The trainers really knew what they were doing. The feedback is great and they will help develop your skills properly. I feel like after one month, I could walk into a classroom and feel confident in my teaching method.

As someone with little extrinsic knowledge of the English language, this class was very challenging. You can pretty much count on not doing anything for an entire month except CELTA work. Now having finished the course, I can see how much all that stress and hard work will benefit me in the future.

I think it’s a good idea to consider who your trainers are before taking the course. They are the ones guiding you throughout the learning process. Heather and Muhammad were amazing trainers. Take it in Chicago if possible!

I completed the CELTA course at the Teaching House New York City in August 2013. I can honestly say that it was a rigorous and very challenging month, but worth the money and time spent.

I had two excellent teacher trainers (Sharon Balani and Julie Bray). They were both extremely knowledgeable, patient and effective. I had never received formal teaching classes prior to this experience and their explanations and methods of teaching were clear and understandable. They were always willing to help and encourage us when the pressure of the intensive course was taking its toll on our nerves.

All in all, if you’re interested in teaching English as a second language, this course is very beneficial. I acquired many teaching tools which I believe will be useful for the rest of my career in education.

Looking back at the CELTA course I completed in December at the Teaching House Chicago, I have to say that those four weeks were the most intense ones of my whole life – but also the most rewarding ones. It is absolutely amazing what one can gain and learn within a short four week period. Yes, the course comes along with an immense workload which challenged me quite a bit. However, I always had the feeling that every step of the course was perfectly structured, well thought-out and intelligently arranged. Even though I have been working in the field of adult education for quite a while, I am still stunned and amazed with the program’s effectiveness. It leaves you feeling well-prepared for your future endeavors in the field of ESL-teaching.

I highly recommend taking the CELTA-course at the Teaching House in Chicago. The location is great, and the center very well-run, yet still personal and cozy. Having Heather (who also runs the center) and Sharon as our trainers was an excellent experience. With their wonderful personalities, their vast experience and knowledge, as well as their commitment and enthusiasm, they made this course a success for us trainees! They even made it fun during the times we were all struggling to cope with the workload and they were always there to lend a helping hand.

Overall, I highly recommend the CELTA-course as well as the Teaching House in Chicago. Together, they make for an exceptional experience!

Teaching House NY provided a terrific CELTA experience. The instructors were very engaging. The school gives an effective structure for improving your teaching ability week after week. The support staff were ready and willing to help, and the students I taught there were amazing. Highly recommended to anyone seeking their CELTA certificate.
