Description
Cambridge Assessment English approved the opening of Teaching House in 2007. With the aim to expand quality English-language teacher training in the United States, Teaching House has opened over 15 center locations and trained over 3,000 new teachers. Teaching House is now the largest provider of Cambridge CELTA courses in the world.
Ensuring the high standards of education that are set by Cambridge English, all Teaching House CELTA courses have a maximum of only 6 trainees working with each trainer. To fulfill this trainer/trainee ratio, the Teaching House staff include over 20 Cambridge English-approved teacher trainers as well as a strong support team based at our headquarters in New York.
In addition to the standard four-week CELTA course format, Teaching House has developed two new formats:
- a 10-week part-time course run on two evenings a week and on Saturdays;
- a part-time blended course over 14 weeks allowing people to work online during the week and do teaching practice on Saturdays.
We also offer in the USA a two week compressed teaching practice option with online content, for those who are only able to take two weeks for their teaching practice component.

Completed the CELTA April 4, 2014 class at Teaching House-Chicago.
Strict adherence to the rigorous CELTA standards is evident and thorough. Portfolios were carefully monitored and reviewed independently by outside staff which instilled much confidence.
The linchpin to maximizing success when taking the CELTA program has an external and internal component… Externally, the value of the depth and breath of experience of the tutors (instructors) cannot be overestimated. I had two tutors and both had decades of experience. They were different from each other (that is a good thing) and they both clearly retained a passion for the work.
The internal component is the focus, intelligence, and passion for teaching ESL that the candidate brings to the effort. I am an older student than most of my peers and can factually say that this was the most intellectually demanding four weeks of my academic life. Be forewarned there is also a heavy physical demand as well…sleep deprivation does take its toll over the course of the four weeks.
During the pre-interview process I suggest you learn in depth, the professional experience level of the specific tutors that will be teaching you. One of my instructors, in addition to teaching experience, had administrative experience with ESL and I found those insights particularly helpful during the job search discussions.
One critique I will offer for consideration is to challenge Teaching House to continue to review the professional topics scheduled to be taught. For example, I would challenge them to identify any objective measure to support the section on teaching different learning styles. It simply was too superficially covered to be worth the time spent reviewing it….and time is everything for the four weeks you are in the class. I’m not sure if the tutor staff had any choice in this matter but I would have benefited so much more by seeing them teach more than once (only on the first day) ESL students. I am convinced they are master teachers and observing them would be most beneficial.
The support staff (one) in Chicago was exceptionally professional and helpful. This is a person that can save you (Wi-Fi goes done at the worst possible moment) when you require help the most. Chicago has an excellent person in place.
Everything I learned was based on the foundation of being student-centered. The students I practiced my newly developing skills were patient, motivated, and only encouraging…
The Teaching House-Chicago CELTA program is excellent and I highly recommend it; the tutors are immensely professional, demanding, and supportive, but it was working with the ESL students that solidified my belief that this was the right career for me. I wish you luck, Richard
