I have just recently completed the CELTA course at Teaching House in New York. I must say it was such a rewarding experience! The teachers Lizzy and Fiona were extremley helpful, supportive and friendly: To actually be taught how to plan a lesson and then give one in front of students was extremely invaluable. These practice lessons gave me a real life experience as to what it will be like when I’m actually teaching on my own. After each lesson, my teachers would encourage what I did correctly and inform me as to what I needed to work on. It was also great to work with and observe my fellow students, as they had their own unique forms of learning and teaching. Through this course, I now feel like I have the knowledge, experience and confidence to teach English. I would highly recommend this course to anyone who wants to be an English teacher.

I just finished my CELTA at Teaching House in New York (THNY) last week, and it was an amazing experience, one I know will provide me opportunities in the future. I feel prepared to go anywhere and teach – not because they taught me everything I need to know (not possible in 120 hours), but because they taught and drilled the basics, as well as how to find and use resources to overcome any difficulties.

It’s not cheap – it’s an investment in your future. Treat it like one.

In your interview, they take care to explain to you what the workload will be like, and what’s expected of you. It’s hard, but absolutely worth it, and you will receive help and support the whole way through.

The staff at THNY can be split into two groups: teachers, and those that run the show – it’s a mistake to only see the teachers as resources. Everyone at THNY is great at what they do, and if you approach them with a question they are always helpful and kind – there’s a great atmosphere there – we’re all there to work, but it’s fun and energizing.

I had amazing tutors – Rob, Amir and Thea, and had the opportunity to work with Amir and Thea closely over the course. They are all extremely knowledgable and provide outstanding feedback and commentary. Every lesson plan returned to me was fully marked with advice for my next lesson, ranging from classroom management, time management or actual content (and often resources that would help me master the material). I can’t praise them enough, they made a hard course manageable.

If you can, I suggest taking the 7-week semi-intensive course. It’s three days a week and allows you the time to really process what you’re learning and incorporate it into your lessons. My class was there along with a normal 4-week course, and they looked extremely frazzled and anxious, while we were much happier and better rested.

THNY has a lot of great resources including a mini-library, a really nice computer lab and lots of rooms so you can always find a place to work. Their student printer is a pain however, and there were a few occasions I almost went Office Space on it. I wish there were an additional one as it gets pretty crowded before class, but if you need help, someone from the office will figure it out for you.

Overall, I whole-heartedly recommend THNY – I loved my time in the program, due largely to the amazing support I received from everyone there.

Overall the CELTA course given at Teaching House in New York was organized in a very professional manner, adequately conveying the importance of professionalism, punctuality and politeness in the teaching profession.

The course content was expertly compiled, alternating methodology and practice in such a way that we, the teacher-students were constantly in a cognitive mode, receiving information that we predicted ourselves and immediately put to use. The result was a very organic intellectual experience that stimulated our learning process, provided us with needed experience and in the end filled us with invaluable confidence in ourselves.

The quality of the feedback was excellent, and very insightful; criticism prevailed only with positive, constructive aims. If there was a want or a lack in our teaching practice, our instructors never pointed it out without incisive analysis of the problem and without providing a clear strategy to correct it. Whatever talents or skills that might have been hidden in us were brought to light in the feedback sessions.

The advice we received in preparing our lesson plans was purposely not dictated in an arbitrary manner but provided in the form of hints to guide us and lead us to discover the practical application of methodology for ourselves.

The instructors were extremely competent, diligent and detail-oriented. Their classes mirrored the curriculum in an engaging, interesting and fun manner, never allowing our interest to wane. Fiona Mulcahy’s and Lizzy Adams’ very different teaching styles complemented each other perfectly as well as the choice of levels we were brought to teach.

The information we were provided with at the end of the course for job placement was very useful, and the tutorials for CV writing were an essential, practical addition to the curriculum.

The facilities were new, clean at all times and orderly. The computer room was large and contained state-of-the-art equipment that was available to the students from early morning hours to late evening, providing us with an ideal work space to research and plan lessons.

The resources were varied and enriching. Some helped student-teachers plan grammar, vocabulary and functions lessons with simple, easily-conveyed rules that went into the “hear of the matter” without needless jargon. Others, such as video and audio clips were instrumental in helping us make our reading, writing and listening lessons creative and interactive. Videos of experienced teachers enlightened our understanding of more complex aspects of methodology by providing us with a practical model we could refer to in our lessons and our assignments.

Finally, the staff was at all times extremely helpful and courteous, despite the high level of stress due to the intensive character of the course.

In conclusion, I highly recommend the CELTA course at Teaching House New York as an essential step along the path of English language teaching.

What an amazing experience! I’m in the process of changing careers from Fashion Merchandising/ Retail to the world of teaching ESL. At the end of the 7 week course, I could not believe what I walked away with. I felt the course was very well designed- 9 teaching practices and 4 assignments. We had the chance to teach two different groups: pre-int and upper- int. Our tutors were very different in personality/ teaching styles. One was very animated, high energy and the other very calm. Both very effective. They made learning these sort of foreign concepts easier to process and more importantly made it fun for us.

Gripes:

No coffee machine

Only one printer for all classes

The $25 fee for collecting your CELTA 5

Other than these three things, I really enjoyed taking this course and would recommend this to anyone merely thinking about taking it.

I finished my CELTA at the Teaching House Chicago back in mid-november, and I can’t recommend taking the course there enough! As many people have said, yes it is challenging, and yes it’s stressful and a ton of work, but not only is the certification completely worth the work and the price, but the staff and facilities at the Teaching House in Chicago were excellent.

Heather, who’s runs the Teaching House and also trained our class, is well organized, knowledgable, and really makes herself available to the trainees. She’s got a wealth of experience and knowledge about CELTA, as well as life as an ESL teacher, and she’s very willing to answer any questions you have. The same was true of the other trainer, Mohamed. Mohamed was a freelancer, so he isn’t always at that school, but he too did an amazing job teaching us and supporting us through the course. Between the two of them, I left the course feeling very well prepared to enter onto an ESL career path. If you’re looking for a course, take it with Teaching House in Chicago!!

I took the CELTA course at the Chicago Teaching House location in July 2013 and absolutely loved the course. I was provided with exactly what I needed to become a productive ESL teacher, from constructive and critical feedback to teaching practice with students at different language levels. I appreciated how the course challenged me but didn’t leave me blind not knowing what to expect either. They set the program up to let you know exactly what you are getting into and that you are going to have to apply yourself while guiding you through exactly what you are required to accomplish. Heather Hotaling was extremely helpful in putting me in contact with people I needed to be communicating when considering job placement. Overall I feel I got everything I desired out of the course and more.

I took the CELTA course at the Chicago Teaching House location a few months ago, and I found it to be well worth what I paid for it. There was a lot of hard work involved, but I never felt like I was wasting my time doing busy work; everything we did was pretty much directly relevant to planning and teaching a successful English lesson. The course skews heavily toward the practical, throwing you into teaching an actual class on the second day, with just enough theory to help you understand what’s going on. The Chicago center’s instructors were both very knowledgeable and had years of experience teaching. They gave excellent and constructive feedback. The center itself had a good amount of resources available for lesson planning and background reading on theory, and there were a couple of days near the end of the course dedicated to individual job hunting advice and resume building. Overall, I was extremely pleased with my experience and would happily recommend the Teaching House Chicago’s CELTA program to anyone.

I just finished my CELTA through Teaching House Chicago’s 4-week intensive course, and I want to give my highest recommendation to Teaching House in general and the Chicago center in particular. Because of them I had a wonderful experience throughout the most intense 4-week period of my life, and I feel extremely well prepared to teach EFL.

Taking the CELTA at Teaching House Chicago was well worth the time and the money. I learned so much from my amazing trainers, from the CELTA methodology, and from practicing ESL teaching in an authentic environment with personalized feedback from seasoned pros. My teaching improved dramatically over those four weeks, and as I’ve reviewed my materials and feedback in the time since I’ve found that there’s still more to learn from the experience.

I can’t emphasize enough how incredibly helpful and rewarding this course is for aspiring EFL teachers. From the carefully crafted input sessions on different aspects of effective EFL teaching, to the wonderful lesson planning guidance, to the invaluable feedback on teaching practice, Teaching House Chicago provided an incredibly supportive and well-organized framework for all of its trainees. I can’t thank my trainers enough for their profound dedication and patient mentorship throughout the course—they made my experience with CELTA more enriching and rewarding than I could have imagined. Thank you Heather and Mohamed, and thank you Teaching House!

Intense? Yes. Lots of preparation? You bet. Worth the time and money? YES! I took the 10-week CELTA course in January 2012. The 10-week course is perfect for those with full time jobs or in college who have some spare time and are interested in teaching (or at least earning a TESOL certificate). Instruction classes were held all day on Saturdays while teaching practices were held on weeknights twice a week. Was I stressed out? Sometimes. Lost lots of sleep? Of course. However, having the opportunity to practice teaching in front of bonafided English language learners is challenging, yet helpful by providing clues on how to improve your lesson preparation and refine your teaching style. My instructors, Sharon, Lizzy and Brian, were very thorough in their explanations and always gave sound advice. They were always available to answer the many questions we had for them. They pushed us hard but genuinely wanted us to succeed in becoming great teachers and brought out the best in us. I learned a whole lot from them! If you’re still looking for a CELTA/TESOL certificate school that offers live teaching practices in a classroom setting, stop and call Teaching House today!

I wholeheartedly recommend the CELTA course at Teaching House: NYC to any aspiring English teacher. From course content to teacher feedback, the teacher trainers at TH:NYC reinvigorated and refined my pedagogy. As an adjunct instructor teaching writing and public speaking in New York, I was used to lecturing, but I quickly found out that if was going to be a successful ESL teacher, I needed to revamp my pedagogy. My trainers, Svitlana and Heather, observed each lesson with scrupulous eyes, taking note of the slightest improvement or setback. This dynamic was nerve-wracking at first, but their attention to detail and constructive criticism helped me create more effective, student-centered lessons.

Trainees taught in the afternoon, and we studied ESL theory and English grammar in the morning. Svitlana and Heather provided handouts for each lesson/theory, all of which ended up in the binder TH provides on day one. By the end of the course, that green binder was in many ways a course manual/teaching handbook that I’ve used as a guide to plan class and to prep for interviews.

I haven’t yet tried my hand at any job overseas, but this degree proved useful soon after the course ended. I taught four sections of Italian exchange students for two weeks in July, one month after the course ended, and the theories and practices championed throughout my CELTA course were a strong foundation for what became a very demanding teaching environment. I’m currently employed as a “Learning Diversity Coordinator,” grant-speak for a professional tutor with a focus in ESL, at a college in the Mid-Hudson Valley. My interviewers, now bosses, were extremely impressed by this course and its emphasis on student-centered learning.

This course demands that you evaluate and then reevaluate your pedagogy, a process that undoubtedly makes you a more effective educator. If you look to language as a career, then you’ll find this course fulfilling, rewarding, and invaluable.
