I took the TEFL course with TLH a year ago, and I’m still receiving support and resources from the people involved with the school. It was a great course with incredibly devoted and knowledgeable staff. You leave the course with a huge network of people, which changes the experience you have moving to a foreign company. I would recommend The Language House to anyone looking to receive their TEFl certification!

After graduating from The Language House’s TEFL course in March 2015 – one of the best decisions I’ve made so far – I’ve appreciated my time there more and more as I’m now out in the real world and successfully working as an English teacher in Prague. Chris Westergaard and team do a fantastic job at taking care of their trainees (down to my needing last minute accommodation arrangements!) and preparing them for the real world of TEFL. I couldn’t recommend a better long-term decision than to take the TEFL course at The Language House.

I attended The Language House in March 2015 and have been successfully teaching in the Czech Republic ever since. The knowledgeable and attentive staff guided me through every step of the process. They provided information on my visa, work permit, accommodation and how to navigate the beautiful city of Prague. The TEFL course itself is a wealth of information, materials and hands on teaching experience. I had planned on staying in Prague for the duration of the course but found so many job opportunities, I chose to pursue my career right here. I owe so much of my success here to Chris Westergaard and the entire Language House staff. I would highly recommend it to anyone serious about learning the skills to teach abroad.

If you want to teach English in Prague, The Language House is a great program to go through.

The course was fun but rigorous–we practiced grammar concepts, identified which were appropriate for which learner levels, learned to craft our own lessons from scratch or a text book, and even went over how to teach specialized English classes such as those for business and specific proficiency tests.

Expect it to be difficult. By Thursday of the first week, we began teaching students after our own school day every day except for Fridays, but all of that real teaching experience bolsters confidence and makes job interviews and unassisted lessons easier.

Our lessons were observed and reviewed by experienced teachers, and their advice was always couched in a positive way, was spot-on, and provided achievable goals for the next lesson.

Lesson plan guidance and job placement are the two places where I was torn about my rating.

The negative aspect of lesson planning was that, because of the rigor of the course, one is thrown into teaching quickly and must generate original material each day with a fairly limited amount of time and very limited experience. While the staff will happily offer support, it can still be difficult to come up with interesting and level appropriate vocabulary, listening material, and reading material that the students haven’t done before. It can also be difficult to find a private student, create personalized lesson plans for them, and find the time to teach them two lessons, all around an already full Language House schedule–which is a requirement for the course. It can be stressful preparing lessons for such a variety of different situations in quick succession, rather than having the time to truly perfect one type of lesson before moving on to the next.

However, the difficulty of constantly generating new lessons for a variety of different kinds of students is exactly the experience I had teaching English after leaving The Language House. Finding private students is also a very real and necessary skill to practice. For those reasons, I feel that my quibbles with the lesson planning portion of The Language House reflect the pressures of a short term program aimed at preparing would-be teachers for a creatively demanding job, rather than a pitfall in the curriculum.

Job Placement was another category I was hesitant about rating. I sometimes see TEFL programs offer guaranteed job placement. The Language house does not do that, nor do I think any other program in Prague truly can. As far as I know, when one graduates any of the TEFL programs, one must always interview and find work for oneself. That’s not to downplay the help that The Language House offers—they assist in CV writing, resume creation, and they point one towards the appropriate work visa assistance and the websites where jobs are posted, but ultimately job placement is one’s own responsibility and I wouldn’t want my high rating to make anyone assume otherwise.

Lastly, the thing I hear time and time again as a boon of the Language house is our strong community and long standing support. The Language House has been around for quite some time and it is very good about bringing previous classes together with frequent events. That can be a great help when one is in a foreign country and doesn’t yet have an abundance of family and friends to fall back on. The Language House will also continue to assist with resources, whether they be physical—access to a printer/copying machine when needed, or professional—a thoughtful and complete response to a grammar question such as the intricacies of the differences between ‘don’t need’ and ‘needn’t,’ The Language House is there for its students and alumni.

After deciding to teach English abroad, there were many different options for getting certified. The Language House came highly recommended from a previous graduate, so I decided that’s who I would go through. It turned out to be a great decision. The intensive course comprehensively covered all of the bases, giving my classmates and I the skills to effectively teach our students. The instructors are highly knowledgable on the subject matter, and they clearly demonstrated what was expected of us. Though it was intense, I am very happy with my decision to go through The Language House.

I highly recommend The Language House TEFL! I’m really glad I chose it for my TEFL. I was really impressed not only with the actual education we received, but also with the strong TLH community that you immediately join when you arrive in Prague. The course is definitely intense, but it’s worth it when they help you with jobs and do everything they can to ease you into expat life. I would recommend (and have recommended!) this course to my friends. Do it!

The Language House’s TEFL course is a program that is a wonderful first step to moving abroad and opening a new chapter. The school provides amazing support throughout the course and after. The staff was incredibly helpful in all areas, even outside the classroom as they assisted in job placement and housing. The program was well organized, thought out and provided students with a hands on experience. Upon graduation all of the students felt at ease entering a classroom to teach. After graduation the Language House is still like an international family and I know that will continue to be a source of support.

If you’re thinking about TEFL, the Language House is a great option for training. You get plenty of instruction in methodology and grammar, as well as lots of hands-on teaching practice. I was slightly terrified of the thought of teaching before I arrived at the program, but by the time I left, I felt confident that I could successfully teach in any classroom. The instructors give you lots of feedback during the course, so that you can focus on the areas that need improvement. TLH also has a great graduate community in Prague, and lifetime job assistance. When it comes to TEFL certification, you can’t go wrong with TLH!
